ADELANTO – The City of Adelanto is holding a meeting on August 23, 2016, to discuss the tax proposed for businesses that cultivate, manufacture, distribute, transport, test and/or distribute marijuana, officials said. The decision to place the measure on the ballot was made at the July 13, 2016, City Council meeting and will be on the November 8, 2016, ballot.
The meeting will take place at Heritage Field, formerly Maverick’s Stadium located at 12000 Stadium Way in the City of Adelanto. City officials say that the tax should ease the financial crisis that the city has faced for quite a while without adding additional taxes to the citizens. The meeting to explain why the city’s Municipal Code has to be amended in order for the tax to take effect.
“Our City is at a crossroads and must find additional sources of revenue or risk facing the potentially severe consequences of municipal bankruptcy,” said Mayor Richard Kerr. “Despite every effort to cut costs and raise revenue, the City still faces deficits that undermine essential services and threaten the health and safety of the people of Adelanto,” Kerr added.
City officials believe that although they have attempted to resolve these deficits in revenue through an aggressive Economic Development program the tax would be one way to help at least ease the financial distress. “That’s the main reason we’re holding the Town Hall meeting, for residents to learn that the tax will not apply to them and how the funds will support essential services and programs such as public safety, Public Works, Parks,” said Kerr.
