HESPERIA, Ca. – While adjusting to the new life of her 19-year-old son who was in a debilitating traffic collision in late September, a mother is now mourning the loss of her 24-year-old son.
Jonathan Maldonado, 24, of Apple Valley, while just celebrated his birthday less than a week ago was killed while walking on Mariposa Road, near Live Oak Street. Through investigation, authorities said that around 7:00 p.m., on October 16, 2019, Maldonado had, for unknown reasons, became involved in a physical altercation with his girlfriend who was driving the vehicle he was in. After he allegedly assaulted her, he exited the passenger seat of the vehicle and began to flee on foot northbound on Mariposa road when he was struck from behind by a 2006 Honda Odyssey.
The Honda remained at the scene as deputies and emergency medical personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to the traffic collision. Maldonado was determined to be deceased on arrival.
The Hesperia Station Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is conducting the investigation. Mariposa Road was closed in both directions until approximately 11:00 pm from Live Oak Street to Main Street while investigators collected evidence. The investigation is on-going and anyone with information regarding the collision is asked to contact Deputy D. Whitson or Deputy R. Ballantyne from the Hesperia Sheriff’s Station at (760) 947-1500.
A fatal traffic collision occurred last night at Mariposa Road and Live Oak Street, the roadway has been reopened.
