Apple Valley Officials Invites Public to Michael H. Martin Gymnasium Dedication Ceremony

APPLE VALLEY – The Town of Apple Valley is inviting the community to the dedication ceremony for the Michael H. Martin Gymnasium on Saturday, January 7, 2016.

Martin was an essential part, playing a major role in the success of many kids who played sports in the Town of Apple Valley. As the Town of Apple Valley Parks and Recreation Commissioner from 2005 until his passing on December 31, 2015, Town officials said that Martin “was instrumental in the growth of the youth basketball league and implemented the first pee wee sports programs for Apple Valley.”

Known as “Big Mike”, he mentored and coached thousands of kids who now remember his support, guidance, advice and credit him for keeping them out of trouble. Martin had a history with the Town of Apple Valley prior to becoming the Commissioner, working for the Recreation and Park District from 1985 through 2001.

“Thanks to Mike, the gym was and shall remain a safe haven, where the youth of Apple Valley may come to play,” Town officials said. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, January 7, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at the gym located at 13413 Navajo Road, next to James A. Woody Community Center.
