SAN BERNARDINO – The driver who was involved in a hit-and-run collision that killed a woman who was a mother of eight and 9-months pregnant was arrested officials said.
On Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at around 11:35 p.m. Mercedes Vanesa Guevara, 31, allegedly sped through a red light and hit Maribel Gonzalez, 39, who was crossing in the crosswalk at Highland Avenue and Medical Center Drive. Guevara fled the scene and crashed into a fence, causing her vehicle to catch on fire. She exited the burning vehicle and according to San Bernardino Police, was picked up by an unidentified person.
Through investigation, it was determined that Guevara was the person driving the suspect vehicle. She was arrested in the City of Corona and booked into jail for Vehicular Manslaughter with Gross Negligence. She is being held in lieu of $200,000 bail. She is scheduled to appear at the San Bernardino Superior Court on Wednesday, July 18, 2018.
