BARSTOW – An apparent unprovoked attack led to a male victim being airlifted to the hospital and a suspect being behind bars for attempted murder.
At around 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2018. Barstow police were dispatched to a disturbance in the 1700 block of East Main Street in front of the Mega Tom Burgers. While en route to the location the caller told dispatchers that the suspect was a White man who was hitting another man in the head with a large rock. The caller told dispatchers that the victim appeared to be unconscious as the suspect continued the savage attack. As several citizens were in the area shocked by what they were witnessing, two San Bernardino County Probation Officers in the area were flagged down. They stopped and arrested the suspect without incident. Police arrived shortly after and identified the suspect as Zane David Williams, a 20-year-old Barstow resident. Witnesses confirmed that Williams was the suspect who assaulted the victim. Williams was arrested for attempted murder and booked into the West Valley Detention Center. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail and is scheduled to appear at the Victorville Superior Court on Tuesday, May 1, 2018.
Through investigation, it was learned that the victim was crossing East Main Street when Williams approached him and began hitting him before grabbing a large rock and striking him in the head with it. The force of the rock sent the victim to the ground. Williams picked the same rock up several more times hitting the victim with it over and over. Some citizens witnessed the assault, while others attempted to stop the attack. The victim suffered injuries to his head and to his face and was transported to Barstow Community Hospital, where he was then airlifted to Loma Linda Hospital. The rock was located at the scene and collected as evidence. Williams was booked into the High Desert Detention Center for Attempted Murder.
