VICTORVILLE – A 24-year-old Barstow man was arrested for assaulting several people following a Victorville collision, officials said.
On Saturday, June 30, 2018, at around 9:13 p.m., deputies from the Victorville station were dispatched to Nisqualli Road and 11th Avenue for a traffic collision. Multiple reports flooded into 911 reporting that a male was fighting with others at the site of the collision. When deputies arrived they learned that a woman who was driving a Chevy Tracker east on Nisqualli failed to stop at the red light at the intersection and collided with a female driving a Chrysler Town and Country that was traveling south on 11th.
The fiancé of the woman in the Chrysler witnessed the collision and opened the driver’s door of the Chevy. “Thompson approached the Chevy and opened the driver’s door,” said Victorville Sheriff’s Spokeswoman Mara Rodriguez. “He demanded the driver pay for the damages. He then assaulted her and attempted to grab her purse and pull her out of the vehicle.” Vernell Thompson was unsuccessful in pulling the woman out of the vehicle, as she was still in her seatbelt. A husband and wife saw the vehicles at the scene and offered to help, but Thompson then assaulted them also. The female fell to the ground after being struck with Thompson’s fist and broke her arm.
Thompson fled from the scene, but was later located nearby and taken into custody. He was booked into the High Desert Detention Center for Robbery and Assault with a Deadly Weapon. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail and is scheduled to appear at the Victorville Superior Court on Tuesday, July 3, 2018. Three people in the Chrysler complained of pain and were transported to the hospital, as was the female Good Samaritan for her broken arm.
