BIG BEAR – A 21-year-old Big Bear Lake man is behind bars after sexually assaulting a 60-year-old woman Saturday night.
Authorities said that just before 10:00 p.m. they responded to the report of an unknown man entering their Big Bear Lake home in the 42700 block of Cedar Avenue. Through investigation, deputies learned that the suspect, later identified as Cody Lynn Mortensen entered the home and contacted the homeowner’s 13-year-old granddaughter. The girl hurried to her grandmother to inform her that the unknown man was in the living room. The woman (grandmother) confronted Mortensen telling him to leave. Mortensen attempted to push past her to get to the girl, who was hiding in a bedroom.
The victim struggled, attempting to protect her granddaughter and fighting him with her cane. During the fight with the suspect, Mortensen sexually battered the woman. She was able to get away from Mortensen, but fell and he continued hitting her. Deputies arrived on scene and took the suspect into custody. Mortensen told deputies that he was looking for his girlfriend, who he believed was inside the home.
Mortensen was booked into the West Valley Detention Center for sexual battery, elder abuse, false imprisonment, and burglary. He is being held in lieu of $125,000. He is scheduled to appear at the San Bernardino Superior Court on Tuesday afternoon.
