HESPERIA – Homicide investigators were called to the scene after the body of a 38-year-old Phelan man was located floating in the aqueduct Monday evening. A 911 call was made by a witness stating he saw what appeared to be a deceased person floating in the center of the aqueduct near El Centro Street and Cottonwood Avenue at around 5:15 p.m. The witness told authorities that he would follow the body, which was floating in the fast-moving water toward Ranchero Road.
When the deputy arrived he made contact with the witness who was still quickly following the body toward Ranchero. The deputy confirmed that it was in fact, a body. The San Bernardino Fire Department and Sheriff’s Dive Team responded to the Aqueduct near Ranchero and 11th. The body of Alfonzo Mercado was recovered by the water by fire personnel and a dive team member. The Coroner arrived at the scene to take possession of the body.
The area was cordoned off and was being called a crime scene by authorities at the scene. Homicide investigators arrived at the scene to conduct a death investigation. The cause of death will be determined by the Coroner, who will conduct an autopsy.
