Convicted Murderer and Rapist Charged for 1991 Cold Case Murder

DEVORE – For over 25 years a family was left to wonder who was responsible for the murder of 24-year-old, Cynthia “CJ” White of Devore. Now, years after the case went cold, a suspect has been charged with her murder. On May 27, 1991, deputies responded to the report of a deceased woman on the 18000 block of Santa Fe Avenue in Devore. When they arrived they found White deceased in the home. Homicide detectives arrived at the home to conduct an investigation and the Coroner arrived to retrieve her body.

The cause of death was later determined to be strangulation. After numerous interviews, clearing multiple persons of interest, the case went cold in 1993. The case was reopened by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department homicide cold case team in 2012. DNA evidence was sent in for analysis. Through investigation, and an advance and technology Dean Eric Dunlap was identified as a potential suspect in 2013. Dunlap was already serving time for an arrest made on April 26, 2000, for a 1992 kidnapping and murder in the City of San Bernardino. Dunlap was found guilty in that case for murder, kidnapping to commit robbery or rape, rape by force, and lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14.

Still, after identifying Dunlap as a suspect in the murder of White, interviews, and follow-ups were necessary in order to submit a solid case to the District Attorney’s office. At the conclusion of the investigation, a Deputy District Attorney reviewed the case. On Tuesday, October 4, 2016. Yocum charged Dunlap with murder with bail set at $1,000,000. Dunlap is currently serving time in a California State Prison but will be transported to San Bernardino County to face these charges.
