Deputy-Involved Shooting Leaves Attempted Murder Suspect Dead

HESPERIA, CA. – A male subject wanted for attempted murder and residential robbery was shot and killed by deputies on Monday.

Barstow Specialized Enforcement Division (SED) has been investigating multiple crimes, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and residential robbery that occurred in the City of Barstow. A 33-year-old Barstow man was named as the suspect and authorities learned of his location, in a parking lot in the 15700 block of Main Street in the City of Hesperia.

At around 1:30 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2020, deputies made contact with the suspect in the parking lot. He was seated in the passenger side of a sedan. Deputies asked the driver to exit the vehicle and he did. Rather than continuing to comply with the commands of the deputies, the suspect got into the driver’s seat of the vehicle. Deputies continued telling him to exit the vehicle but the suspect began ramming into the deputy’s vehicles.

The suspect then got out of the vehicle with a machete leading the deputies to use less than lethal Blunt Impact Projectile rounds. The suspect dropped the machete but reached for a rifle. When the deputies realized the suspect was arming himself, they shot the suspect. The suspect, whose name will not be released until his family has been notified, was struck by the gunfire and despite lifesaving efforts, the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Per the deputy-involved shooting protocol, Homicide detectives responded to the scene to assume the investigation.
No deputies were injured during the incident. No additional information is available for release at this time.
