BAKER – A 49-year-old Illinois fugitive was killed after a 15 freeway pursuit on Thursday evening. At around 4:30 p.m. the federal marshals from Illinois received information from a Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas Nevada that a male fugitive from Springfield Illinois was playing in a poker tournament at their location.
CHP officials said that the armed and dangerous fugitive had cut off his ankle monitor. Las Vegas area marshals saw the fugitive when he was coming out of the casino. They pursued him for a short period of time prior to losing him. His girlfriend told authorities that she had contacted him and learned that he was at Whiskey Pete’s Casino at Stateline. The federal marshals went to Whiskey Pete’s to find the fugitive, and at around 7:35 p.m. he fled Stateline with the Nevada Highway Patrol and Las Vegas Metro pursuing him.
Only around 5 minutes later Barstow CHP took over the pursuit at the 15 freeway and Nipton Road. Additional units from the Barstow CHP planned to deploy spike strips and remained in place on the 15 freeway south of Afton Road. The pursuit reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour until at around 8:10 p.m. the fugitive got off of the freeway at Atron road at a high rate of speed subsequently losing control of his vehicle. The vehicle overturned and the male fugitive was ejected. The vehicle landed on top of the ejected fugitive causing fatal injuries.
CHP officials can not confirm if alcohol or drugs are a factor in this incident at this time.
