RIVERSIDE – A Perris man and woman were arrested for stealing from vehicles at the Galleria at Tyler (Tyler Mall) Sunday afternoon. At around 4:00 p.m. Riverside police responded to the report of a vehicle burglary that had just occurred. Witnesses were able to give the suspect vehicle description and with the help of the air support unit (AIR-1) the suspect vehicle was quickly located leaving the parking lot. Air-1 directed ground units to the vehicle where they eventually stopped at Magnolia Avenue and Harrison Street.
Officers quickly determined that the vehicle the pair was in was stolen and approached the two suspects. When contact was made, items belonging to victims of three separate thefts as well as items consistent with identity theft were located in the possession of the suspects. Andrew Yanez, 21 and Margarita Perez, 22 were arrested and booked into jail for theft, possession of stolen property and identity theft. Perez was also found to have an outstanding felony warrant, officials said.
It was later learned that Yanez and Perez were targeting vehicles with the windows partially down.
This is a good reminder to our community members and visitors to make sure to leave your cars locked and secured, and do not leave any valuables or packages out in plain sight. Theft is a crime of opportunity. To help lessen your chances of becoming a victim, you need to lessen the opportunity for thieves to take when passing by your vehicle. Even on these summer days with high temperatures, it is much better to come back to a hot car not tampered with than a cool car with your belongings stolen. – Riverside Police Department
