HESPERIA, Ca. – A Hesperia man crashed into a semi-truck while attempting to flee from authorities on Thursday night.
Deputies from the Hesperia Station responded to the 8000 block of Gaylop Avenue in the City of Hesperia for the report of a suspicious vehicle. The reporting party said that the vehicle had entered her driveway and the driver, Acey Cruz, 34, entered her backyard. When the reporting party made contact with Cruz, he told her that he was looking for a family member. The reporting party told dispatchers that she recognized Cruz and he lived in her neighborhood. Cruz left her home before deputies arrived.
Deputies made contact with the reporting party and after a records check, it was learned that Cruz’ family, who lived in the area had an active restraining order against him. Deputies responded to the home where Cruz’ family lives. Cruz was at the home and returned to his vehicle when he saw deputies approaching the home.
Deputies attempted to stop Cruz but he failed to stop, leading to a pursuit. Cruz sped down the streets in excess of 115 miles per hour disregarding most stop signs and traffic signals. The pursuit went through Hesperia and into Victorville, where Victorville deputies assisted.
Cruz eventually failed to stop at a red light and collided with a semi-truck at the Bear Valley Road and Ninth Avenue intersection in the City of Victorville. Cruz got out of his vehicle and fled on foot but eventually surrendered. Cruz sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to the hospital for treatment. The driver of the semi-truck did not sustain injuries as a result of the collision.
Cruz was booked at the High Desert Detention Center for Evading a Peace Officer with Disregard for Public Safety. Additional charges of hit-and-run and Cruz’s violation of the restraining order will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for consideration. Cruz is scheduled to appear at the Victorville Superior Court on Monday, October 18, 2021. Meanwhile, he is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
