PHELAN – A 40-year-old Hesperia man lost his life in an I-15 crash late Thursday morning. According to CHP officials, Gabriel Edwardo Torres was driving a 2008 white Freightliner semi-truck pulling two trailers loaded with gravel. Torres was driving southbound on in an unincorporated area of Phelan north of SR-138 when for unknown reasons, he allowed the vehicle to exit onto the runaway truck ramp. As the truck went onto the runaway truck ramp Torres lost control causing the truck and trailer to overturn. The driver became trapped in the truck.
Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene and attempted to free the driver. Due to the severity of his injuries resulting from the crash, Torres was determined to be dead at the scene. The cause of the collision is being investigated, it is unclear if the cause was a result of driver error or mechanical failure. Alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be a factor in this collision.
The family of Torres started a Go Fund Me memorial account to assist the family with the unplanned expenses associated with his untimely death.
