HIGHLAND – A terrifying ordeal ended peacefully with a suspect in custody on New Year’s Eve. At around 3:05 p.m. deputies from the Highland Station responded to a shots fired call in the 7400 block of Lynwood Way in the City of Highland.
The investigation into the incident revealed that Jason Brandon Scott, 33, of Highland, was firing a rifle outdoors and ran inside his home where his girlfriends 4-month-old baby was. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department set up a perimeter using Sheriff’s Aviation, ground units, and the Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division. Immediately, negotiations began, the initial goal was to protect the infant boy who they could hear crying inside the home. Scott released the baby unharmed and the paramedics at the scene examined him as a precaution prior to releasing him to his mother.
Scott remained barricaded inside of the home after releasing the baby, but later also surrendered and was taken into custody. After the search warrant search of the home, authorities found that Scott, a convicted felon, was in possession of body armor, high-capacity magazines, and several hundred rounds of ammunition. Investigators are actively searching for the rifle. Scott was arrested and booked at the Central Detention Center and is being held on $100,000 bail.
