BERMUDA DUNES – A 36-year-old Indio man lost his life after being struck by a vehicle on Christmas morning. Ramon Contreras was walking from the roadway on 42nd Avenue, east of Jamaica Sands in Bermuda Dunes. A 2006 Jeep SUV, driven by 55-year-old Suzanne Maraz, of Palm Desert was driving westbound on 42nd Avenue at the same time.
Contreras was crossing from eastbound lanes of 42nd Avenue, through the center divider and into the left westbound lane, directly in front of the Jeep. The Jeep struck Contreras and stopped immediately. Emergency medical personnel arrived and determined that Contreras was dead at the scene. The three occupants of the Jeep were not injured as a result of the collision.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation. The driver of the Jeep was not intoxicated at the time of the collision, although it has not been ruled out for Contreras. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact the Indio California Highway Patrol at (760)772-5300.
