Jurupa Valley Carjacking Suspect Shot After Pursuit and Standoff

JURUPA VALLEY – A suspect was shot and killed after a Jurupa Valley carjacking, and chase ending in a stand-off in La Quinta, officials said. At around 3:50 p.m. Jurupa Valley Police responded to the report of a carjacking near Mission Boulevard and Crestmore Road. The two female victims told police that while in the vehicle a black man approached. The suspect told them he had a gun and would shoot them if they did not get out of the vehicle. The two complied with his demands and the suspect got in the car.

Officers arrived just moments after the call to find the suspect in the vehicle. They told him to get out of the vehicle, but he remained inside. Attempting to force the suspect to comply, a pepper ball launcher was deployed which only caused the suspect to flee in the stolen vehicle. Police pursued the suspect as he entered the freeway.

The pursuit traveled several miles and through several cities reaching La Quinta. Officers decided to use a spike strip to deflate the vehicle tires to stop the suspect. The spike strip was successful but the driver continued driving, now only on vehicle rims, authorities said. The vehicle stopped near Jefferson Street just south of Avenue 52. Officers called for back-up from the Riverside County SWAT.  When they arrived they communicated with the suspect but he failed to comply with their demands to exit the vehicle.

Finally, at around 7:00 p.m. the suspect got out of the vehicle, but still refused to surrender to authorities on scene. The K-9 was deployed with the hopes that, that would stop the suspect in order to make the arrest. The suspect resisted arrest and continued ignoring verbal commands to surrender. In a last-ditch effort, the SWAT deputies deployed bean bag shotgun rounds which officials said had no effect on the suspect. An officer involved shooting occurred and although emergency personnel was called, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The name of the suspect will not be released so that authorities have time to first notify his family. The officer who fired the service weapon has been placed on a temporary administrative leave per department protocol. Homicide investigators arrived at the scene to conduct an investigation.
