A Florida man was sentenced to 12 months of probation and “Toppy”, the cat he dragged behind his motor scooter was returned to his possession.
According to court documents, Neptune Lester Hugo Steele, 47, was caught on video dragging his cat on a leash from behind his motorized scooter in March 2019. The incident was recorded by a neighbors Ring security cameras. When the neighbors viewed the footage, they posted the video on social media asking for help to identify the person in the video.
Steele was identified and arrested after deputies followed the 6-block long trail of blood left by the injured cat. When the deputies made contact with Steele, who was intoxicated, he told them that the cat had sustained his major paw injuries after being struck by a vehicle. Steele also denied dragging the cat.
Steele pleaded guilty and received a year of probation. In addition he will pay a $1000 fine, undergo a psychological evaluation, and the Florida Keys SPCA will be allowed to make unannounced welfare checks on his pets.
