LA MIRADA, Calif. – The 32-year-old Whittier man who drove a stolen car through the Crunch Fitness in La Mirada was charged with attempted murder today.
Sergio Gabriel Reyes denied allegations today in court on Thursday, March 21, 2019. Reyes was charged with one count of attempted murder, one count of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of vandalism over $400, one count of taking a vehicle without consent. Reyes was a member at the gym and had his membership canceled due to inappropriate behavior. He was confronted by employees and responded by saying that he would return.
At around 1:30 a.m., Reyes allegedly took the vehicle belonging to a relative, and drove to the gym. Witnesses said they heard an engine revving up before he crashed through the front window directly into the path of an employee. The employee quickly moved out of the way and was not injured.
Reyes exited the vehicle and fled the scene. He ran to a car, determined to be his nearby and got into the passenger seat. A getaway driver inside fled but crashed into a curb a short time later. The driver fled the scene of the collision and Reyes was arrested. It was learned that Reyes was convicted of a 2006 robbery in Los Angeles County.
If convicted as charged, he will face over 25 years in prison. He is scheduled to appear back in court on April 5, 2019.
