MENTONE – A 30-year-old Mentone man was arrested for the rape of a 74-year-old woman authorities said. The rape occurred on Monday, January 19, 2017, in Mentone.
The victim told deputies that she was sleeping in her home and woke up to the suspect on top of her and choking her. She struggled to avoid the sexual assault, but she was no match for the suspect. The elderly woman was sexually assaulted and injured during the attack. The alarm at the home went off and the suspect fled from her home.
Evidence was collected at the scene which linked James Hiles to the rape. Hiles was arrested on Monday, February 6, 2017, and booked into Central Detention Center. He is being held in lieu of $250,000.00 bail.
