COACHELLA, Calif. – A Victorville runaway, reported missing at least three times since 2017, was found deceased in Coachella last month.
Makayla Jean Massey, 18, of Victorville, was first reported missing at the age of 16 in August 2017. She was later located in the City of Los Angeles. She was returned to her Victorville home and went missing again two times before she was found shot to death on June 25, 2019.
On June 25, 2019, at around 6:00 a.m. Makayla’s lifeless body was found in the shoulder area of the road on the 82600 block of Avenue 53, between Monroe and Jackson streets. Two were arrested on June 30th in Indio as a result of her murder. The two arrested were identified as 23-year-old San Diego resident, Alexis Daniel Rosas, and 28-year-old Indio resident, Maury Duarte. The criminal complaint stated that Makayla was murdered since she witnessed an attempted murder.
Although both suspects pleaded not guilty, Rosas remains at the Indio jail where he is being held without bail. Duarte is being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside in lieu of $1 million bail.
