APPLE VALLEY – An Apple Valley mother and teen son died as a result of a traffic collision on Sitting Bull road, near Tamiani Road on Tuesday evening.
On Tuesday evening at around 5:42 p.m., a 2006 Silver Saturn Ion was traveling northbound on Tamiani road near Sitting Bull Road. The Saturn was driven by Jaqueline Contreras, 34, of Apple Valley. When Contreras approached the intersection of Sitting Bull Road she failed to stop at the stop sign and was struck by a westbound traveling white 2012 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 21-year-old Apple Valley resident, Richard Gonzales. Both vehicles careened off of the roadway, with the Saturn driven by Contreras’ vehicle landing on its roof. Both vehicles sustained major damage as a result of the crash.
Apple Valley Sheriff’s deputies and Apple Valley Fire Protection District and AMR-American Medical Response responded to the scene. Both Jaqueline and Ruben Contreras, 16, of Apple Valley were trapped inside the vehicle. Three air ambulances were initially requested, but two were subsequently cancelled; one when Ruben Contreras was pronounced dead at the scene and when the second when Jaqueline Contreras was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital to be airlifted but her condition deteriorated. She was rushed into the emergency room where despite lifesaving efforts she was pronounced dead at 7:17 p.m.
Gonzales was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Hospital where he is being treated for major injuries.Sitting Bull Road was closed between Pocomoke Road and Saratoga Road for several hours while deputies from the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station Major Accident Investigation Team investigated the scene. The cause of the collision is currently under investigation by the Major Accident Investigation Team.
