INDIO – A 24-year-old male U.S. citizen was arrested after attempting to smuggle nearly 40 pounds of methamphetamine through a border checkpoint in Indio on Friday.
The El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents were alerted to the possible presence of drugs after the K-9 team’s sniff of the vehicle at Interstate 10 near Dillon Road. The K-9 came up with a positive alert indicating the presence of narcotics in the 2015 black Honda Civic.
The positive alert led to an intensive search where agents located 30 plastic trays, each wrapped in cellophane and aluminum foil and tucked inside the door panels of the vehicle. Inside these trays was a white powdery substance which was confirmed to be methamphetamine.
The street value of the 39.6 pounds of methamphetamine is $158,400. The man, vehicle, and methamphetamine were all taken into the custody of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
