RIVERSIDE, Ca. – A Police officer was seriously injured in a traffic collision after responding to assist a distraught female threatening to jump from the freeway overpass.
In the afternoon on Saturday, August 31, 2019, officers, emergency medical personnel, and Caltrans responded to Adams Street at the 91 freeway for a woman threatening to jump. The freeway was closed in both directions while officers worked to resolve the situation. Officers were able to talk her down and detain her. She was taken to a facility where she can be evaluated and treated.
Once resolved, the patrol SUVs were leaving the scene at around 4:32 p.m. driving approximately 60mph and a Caltrans vehicle was just ahead on the 91 freeway east of Van Buren, when the Caltrans vehicle suddenly veered right into the path of the patrol vehicles. One of the patrol vehicles struck the Caltrans vehicle.
The Caltrans worker did not sustain any injuries as a result of the collision. The officer, who is a 7-year veteran was seriously injured and taken to a local hospital where he is in stable condition. He will remain hospitalized at this time for treatment and observation.
