MT. BALDY – One died and another sustained major injuries after a fall from the Devil’s Backbone area of Mount Baldy on Saturday. Air Rescue 307 responded to the area of steep rocky terrain and located the victims approximately 300 feet down.
The crew determined that a hoist rescue was necessary due to the terrain features in the area. Medical personnel was lowered to the male victims, Lloyd Charton, 69, was found to be deceased. Trevor Anthes, 42, from Bishop was found with serious non-life-threatening injuries sustained while attempting to provide aid to Charton.
Anthes was placed on a harness and hoisted up to the helicopter. He was transported to Loma Linda Medical Center for the treatment of his injuries. The crews later returned and recovered Charton and transported him to the coroner.
