One Dead and One Injured in SR-138 Crash

PHELAN – A traffic collision took the life of one woman and left a second female juvenile injured on Monday. The collision was reported just before 2:08 a.m. on SR-138 approximately 3 miles west of the 15 freeway.

CHP officials were able to determine, that a 2002 black Nissan Sentra was driving westbound on SR-138 when the driver crossed the double yellow lines into eastbound lanes in an attempt to pass a slower moving vehicle.

A silver 2008 Mercedes C30 was heading eastbound on SR-138 and was struck head on by the Nissan. “It is not clear if the Nissan struck the semi-truck and trailer,” CHP officials said in the news release.

When CHP officers arrived they located the mangled vehicles and a 20-year-old South Gate woman, later identified as Magda Pena Capristo dead on arrival. The second person, a female juvenile who was in the Nissan, suffered moderate injuries and was transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital. The woman driving the Mercedes was not injured.

The road was temporarily closed causing major congestion for those traveling SR-138. The identification of the deceased person will be released pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.
