RANCHO CUCAMONGA – A 42-year-old Ontario man was arrested after leading deputies from the Rancho Cucamonga station on a high speed pursuit on Monday. At around 12:10 a.m. on Monday, January 2, 2017, a deputy who was conducting DUI enforcement near Vineyard Avenue. He observed a motorcyclist with several vehicle code violations and noticed similarities with the rider and the suspect involved in a Yucaipa robbery earlier the same day.
The deputy attempted to stop the motorcycle, but the rider continued on leading deputies on a pursuit at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. The pursuit of the rider, believed to possibly be involved in the armed robbery continued through Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, and Upland.
The rider got onto the 60 freeway eastbound onto the westbound off-ramp and sped toward oncoming traffic. Deputies followed the riders in the eastbound lanes and the Sheriff’s helicopter illuminated the motorcycle so those he was driving toward could see him. A traffic break was conducted on the westbound 60 freeway to prevent traffic from traveling toward the suspect vehicle.
The motorcycle broke down, leaving the rider in the #3 and #4 lanes of traffic. The rider, still illuminated by the helicopter spotlight laid on the ground until deputies took him into custody. The suspect, Steve Brown was found to be on felony probation for drug sales and was in possession of a controlled substance. Brown was booked into the West Valley Detention Center for felony evading and possession of a controlled substance for sale.
Brown, who was cleared of the Yucaipa armed robbery that deputies suspected his involvement in, is being held in lieu of $100,000.
