PHELAN – One person was killed and two were injured as a result of a two-vehicle traffic collision at the
the intersection of Phelan and Trinidad Roads. At around 10:44 a.m. on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, two vehicles collided head-on according to CHP incident logs.
CHP officials said that the white Saturn SUV was driving westbound on Phelan Road while the white John’s Plumbing and Rooter van was driving eastbound. The Saturn lost control veering into eastbound traffic causing the vehicles to collide.
The collision was initially reported as a three-vehicle traffic collision but the Volkswagen Jetta that was thought to be involved was able to avoid the collision steering into the shoulder. The Volkswagen was stuck on the dirt shoulder of the roadway per CHP incident logs.
The van and SUV were both overturned with the SUV sustaining major damage. An extensive extrication was required of at least one occupant in the overturned white van.
One patient will be airlifted from the scene to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for the treatment of major injuries, one patient is being transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital for the treatment of minor to 
moderate injuries and the driver of the SUV is confirmed deceased.
The California Highway Patrol shut down Phelan Road in both directions until around 12:50 p.m.
