Pilot Sustains Significant Injuries as a Result of Emergency Crash Landing

MECCA – A 60-year-old Denver, Colorado man sustained significant injuries after his private plane crash-landed approximately 8 miles east of the Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport in Thermal Sunday night.

The pilot and sole occupant, David Wedmore, 60 experienced an aircraft emergency in his single-engine Cessna in the area of Painted Canyon and Box Canyon at approximately 10:36 p.m. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Thermal Station responded to the scene after establishing intermittent communications via cell phone with Wedmore and obtaining GPS coordinates leading them to the crash site.

The Riverside County Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) coordinated the rescue with the assistance of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s (SBSO) aviation unit.  At around 11:30 p.m. Wedmore and the downed plane were located approximately 2.5 miles north of Box Canyon.

Although Wedmore was responsive, he sustained major head and facial injuries. He was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
