RIVERSIDE – Residents in a Riverside neighborhood were shocked when a 20-year-old man ran into their home to hide from pursuing police Sunday night.
At around 9:08 p.m. Riverside Police attempted to stop a man at 7th Street and Franklin Avenue when the suspect fled on foot. As he fled, he pulled out a handgun and fired a single shot in the direction of the police. No officers were injured and the suspect continued running from pursuing officers. The suspect was able to temporarily elude officers on Loma Vista Street, east of Kansas Avenue when he disappeared into the neighborhood.
Police called for support from a K-9 and aerial unit, and a tactical perimeter was established. Officers search nearby yards when a resident in the 2000 block of West Linden Street reported a suspect entered their home and told them he needed to hide because police were chasing him. The home was surrounded and PA announcements were made ordering the suspect to exit the home, but he did not comply.
“A full METRO (SWAT) and Emergency Negotiations Teams callout was initiated and detectives also responded to assist,” Riverside Police officials said. Officers obtained a search warrant and the METRO team entered the home. The suspect, later identified as Fidel Corona of Riverside was located by a police canine and was arrested without further incident. The residence was search and the weapon believed to be involved was located.
Corona was arrested, transported to the hospital for medical clearance, and was subsequently booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for attempted murder of a peace officer and weapons charges.
