RIVERSIDE – A 24-year-old Riverside man is behind bars today after leading the Riverside Police on a pursuit and attempting to ram patrol cars. On Monday, at around 12:16 a.m. officers from the Riverside Police Department attempted to stop a stolen vehicle near Orange and Spruce Streets.
Rather than stopping, the driver continued to drive and igniting a pursuit near Spruce and Mulberry Streets. The driver of the stolen vehicle, later identified as Ryan Rodriguez, lost control and hit the southwest curb at Main Street. The officers, in marked patrol vehicles, ordered the driver to exit the vehicle, but he accelerated in reverse toward the officers causing an officer to fire a shot at the suspect.
The vehicle continued driving westbound on Spruce Street and again lost control near Northbend Street just south of Spruce Street. He fled on foot, but officers quickly found him hiding in a vehicle in the backyard of a Northbend Street home. Rodriguez was shot, and sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. No other injuries occurred as a result of the acceleration toward patrol cars or the officer-involved shooting.
Rodriguez was booked into the Riverside County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. As part of protocol in officer-involved shootings, detectives from the Robbery – Homicide Unit responded to investigate the shooting.
