RIVERSIDE, Ca. – A 25-year-old Riverside man was arrested early Tuesday morning after leading Riverside Police on a pursuit.
At around 1:05 a.m. an officer attempted to make a traffic enforcement stop of a white Honda Civic that was speeding down Alessandro Boulevard at Century Avenue. The vehicle continued on driving recklessly through the Eastside neighborhood causing the stop pursuing the vehicle as it entered the 60 freeway. Around 45 minutes later an officer saw the car exit the freeway and turn into the UCR Campus. The officer began following the vehicle while calling for backup.
The driver turning down a dead end driveway.. Officers conducted a high-risk stop but the driver would not comply and exit the vehicle. Spike strips were placed under the vehicle and the driver backed up and rammed one of the occupied police vehicles. He also drove over the spike strips. He then pulled over and got stuck while trying to go down a wet embankment with his flattened tires. Members from the SWAT team along with other officers apprehended the driver, Leonardo Gamboa Jr.. 26, of Riverside, with the assistance of K-9 Maxx.
Gamboa was arrested after being medically cleared at a local hospital. He was booked into jail for felony evading, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, and resisting arrest using violence. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
