San Bernardino Central Detention Center Inmate Dies While in Holding Cell

SAN BERNARDINO –  An In-Custody death investigation was sparked after a 44-year-old Central Detention Center inmate died Tuesday night. Michael Lorenz, 44 of Redlands was taken into custody without incident on an outstanding warrant Tuesday authorities said in a Wednesday afternoon press release.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials, Lorenz suffered a medical emergency while in a holding cell. Another arrestee in a shared cell alerted jail staff who immediately responded attempting to help Lorenz while requesting an ambulance. Lorenz was taken by ground ambulance to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Specialized Investigations Division responded to the location and the incident is still under investigation. As part of department protocol, when an inmate dies while  in custody the Riverside County Coroner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of his death.
