RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A 16-year-old boy was rescued by Riverside Fire Department firefighters after tumbling in a vehicle approximately 150 feet down an embankment.
On Friday, March 29, 2019, at around 11:00 a.m. the City of Riverside Fire Department responded to the report of a vehicle in a ravine near Van Buren and Canyon Ridge. When firefighters arrived they found the vehicle on its side at the bottom of the ravine around 150 feet off of the roadway.
Authorities believe that the vehicle was approaching the Van Buren and Canyon Ridge intersection when the vehicle crossed Van Buren, striking the curb and subsequently leaving the roadway. The vehicle went airborne and struck the side of the ravine around 100 feet down the embankment. “The vehicle continued down the ravine before coming to rest on its side,” Fire officials said. “Bystanders that witnessed the crash climbed down into the ravine and removed a single occupant, a 16 year old male from the vehicle.”
Rescue ropes were used to descent down into the ravine to evaluate and treat the patient. A mechanical advantage system with ropes and a rescue litter helped the firefighters bring the patient up to the roadway to the waiting AMR ambulance. The boy was transported to an area hospital for the treatment of moderate injuries.
