AUSTIN, TX. – A Texas family is left without a father after he attempted to defend his daughter against an assault by her then-boyfriend.

Police said that in the early-morning hours of Saturday, March 23, 2019, Eric Garcia was at his Austin, Texas, home when heard his daughter’s 24-year-old live-in boyfriend yelling her and accusing her of cheating on him. The boyfriend, identified as Jamie Apodaca, had been with his daughter for only around a month. When Garcia approached, Apodaca began arguing with him. Garcia told Apodaca to leave the home but he continued to argue.

During the argument, Apodaca hit Garcia several times, eventually knocking him onto the ground. His head slammed against the concrete, causing life-threatening head injuries, including brain swelling and a fractured skull, a Go Fund me account said. His injuries were so severe, that his heart stopped beating on the driveway of his home but paramedics worked and got his heartbeat back. After being rushed to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, he was placed on a breathing machine and remained in the Intensive Care Unit in a coma. On Thursday, March 28, 2019, he succumbed to his injuries with his family by his side.

The boyfriend whom Garcia had welcomed to live in their home shortly after he began dating his daughter was arrested. He was booked at the Travis County Correctional Complex on numerous charges on March 23, 2019, at around 5:44 a.m inmate records state.
