VICTORVILLE – Two juveniles are confirmed dead on arrival and several others were injured after a Saturday night traffic collision. The traffic collision at on Mojave Drive at the Amethyst Road intersection was reported at approximately 8:37 p.m. The vehicles involved in the collision were a white Ford Taurus and a red Hyundai Elantra .
Authorities said that the Ford was traveling eastbound on Mojave Drive approaching the Amethyst Road intersection. The Hyundai was traveling northbound on Amethyst Road and attempted to make a left turn onto westbound Mojave Drive in front of the Ford.
Two juveniles who were in the Hyundai, a 10-year-old Teresa Basua and a 12-year-old Pedro Basua Jr. both from Adelanto were determined to be dead on arrival. An 11-year-old boy, the children’s father Pedro Basua, 35, and mother, Gloria Basua, 38, all of Adelanto were transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. The Ford was occupied by Jeremy Cannon, 18, of Adelanto, Marco Amparo, 18, of Adelanto, and Katelyn Garrett, 18, of Victorville. Cannon and Amparo were transported to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries. Garrett was picked up by family at the scene.
This collision makes four people killed at the Mojave Drive and Amethyst intersection since Saturday, February 4, 2017. On February 4, 2017, a DUI driver slammed into a vehicle carrying one man, and two women; one pregnant. The crash killed Angel Barranco, 35, of Adelanto and his unborn child. His wife and mother-in-law also sustained injuries as a result of the collision.
Nearby residents expressed sorrow stating that a traffic signal is needed at that and other nearby intersections to Mojave Drive. Mojave Drive will be closed in both directions from Brucite Road to West Trail for several hours. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is responding to the scene to conduct an investigation. Additional information will be updated as it becomes available.
