RIVERSIDE – A University of California, Riverside (UCR) Bourns Technology Center project experience an approximately $1 million loss due to an early morning fire Saturday. At around 4:52 a.m., the City of Riverside Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 1200 block of Columbia Avenue for the report of computers on fire. Within minutes, City of Riverside Firefighters arrived and quickly determined that a battery bank that is part of the UCR Solar Farm testing.
Two sprinkler heads activated, which kept the fire contained only to the battery bank room fire officials said. The fire was extinguished facilitating a dry chemical extinguisher, but the batteries continued to arc due to the water from the sprinklers. The sprinkler system was shut down and the battery bank was isolated. Firefighters ventilated the room. The approximately $1 million loss was to the Solar farming project itself. The property damage was estimated at $40,000. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
