Victorville Felon Arrested After Shooting Himself in the Hand Accidentally

BARSTOW – A Victorville man was arrested after accidentally shooting himself in the hand while cleaning a firearm on Saturday night.

At around 9:22 p.m. the staff at Barstow Community Hospital called authorities to report that a gunshot victim was at their location. The hospital staff reported that Timothy Pettiway, 22, of Victorville, arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his left hand. Pettiway reported that he had shot himself in the hand while cleaning the firearm at his girlfriend’s home in the 500 block of South Muriel Drive.

Pettiway suffered only minor injuries as a result of the gunshot wound and hid the firearm inside the home before heading to the hospital. Using the description of the firearm, the detective headed over to the Muriel Drive address checked the home and located the scene of the incident and the 9mm handgun. The firearm was confiscated and booked into evidence at the Barstow Police Department.

Through additional investigation, the detective learned that Pettiway is a convicted felon and was prohibited from possessing a firearm. Pettiway was treated, released, and was subsequently arrested.Pettiway was booked into the High Desert Detention Center in the City of Adelanto for being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear at the Victorville Superior Court on Tuesday, January 9, 2018.
