FAWNSKIN – The cause of death of a hiker, later identified as Ernesto Mares, 55, of Whittier remains undetermined authorities said.
At around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday mountain bike riders traveling on Hanna Flats Trail in Fawnskin discovered Mares lying on the trail unresponsive. They bicyclists called 911 to report their finding and paramedics and deputies responded to the trail, just south of Forestry Road 2N13. Medics attempted to resuscitate Mares to no avail, he was pronounced dead at 10:19 a.m.
The exact circumstances surrounding his death are unknown at this time and remain under investigation.
