BARSTOW – An armed Barstow man was shot and killed after leading police on a pursuit on Monday. Officials said that on November 6, 2017, at around 4:50 p.m., the Barstow Police Detective Division were searching for a male suspect wanted for a probation violation.
The man was located sitting in a dark-colored Ford Expedition with a trailer attached in the 300 block of Palm Avenue in the City of Barstow. When the investigators attempted to make contact with the suspect, only described as a 48-year-old White male adult, he quickly drove away. The detectives following the suspect and attempted to make a traffic stop by activating the lights and siren. The suspect failed to stop with the detective following closely behind him as he fled at a high rate of speed. Additional police responded to the area. The suspect continued to drive away at a high rate of speed through residential areas with no regard for public safety, running lights and stop sign.
The police followed the suspect into the 800 block of East Fredricks Street and drove into the front yard of the home colliding with a chain link fence. He also struck a portion of the garage. He exited the vehicle and ran toward the front door of the home as officers pursued on foot. As officers approached the suspect, he produced a handgun and turned toward the officers. One of the officers fired at the suspect and struck him. CPR was performed on the suspect and paramedics were called to the scene. Emergency aid was provided by the Barstow Fire Protection District paramedics, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Barstow Police Officers secured the scene and notified the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Detail per Barstow Police Department policy. A homicide team responded to Barstow to conduct the investigation.
