ONTARIO, Ca. – A 72-year-old man was shot and killed on his way home to his family after working last week.
On Monday, December 14, 2020, several calls regarding a traffic collision with injuries on the southbound 15 freeway at Jurupa Street were reported at around 5:00 p.m. Initial reports indicated that a grey pickup truck had gone off the roadway and struck a light pole, causing injury to the elderly male driver.
When CHP officers and emergency medical personnel arrived, they rendered aid to the driver, Abelardo Magaña but despite lifesaving efforts, he died as a result of his injuries. Through preliminary investigation, it was revealed that Magana had been shot prior to veering off the freeway. CHP officials said that Magana was not the intended target of what they believe was a road rage incident. It is believed that the suspect exited his vehicle in the lanes of the freeway and was standing outside of his vehicle when he fired his gun, shooting Magana.
Magana’s family said that he was returning home from work to his family, including his wife of 53 years, who is battling cancer. Officers believe that there was heavy traffic at the time of the incident and there may be other witnesses who have not yet come forward with information that may be able to help load them to the gunman. They are asking witnesses to come forward to report what they witnessed.
At this time it is believed that the suspect was driving a dark-colored Kia SUV. They also know that he was male, with no further description.
The CHP urged anyone who had any information to contact Investigator James Smith at 909-806-2435. Those who wish to remain anonymous can contact the WeTip hotline at 800-78CRIME or leave a statement at wetip.com
