FONTANA – The 3-month-old kitten who was rescued by Fontana Police after a resident put the kitten in the freezer, squeezed her, and threw her off of a balcony was rescued in my Beth Stern, the wife of TV personality Howard Stern on Saturday.
On February 2, 2018, police were made aware of Lucio Lopez, 34, assaulting a kitten. Before authorities arrived at the scene, Lopez fled the scene. Lopez was later located near Oleander and San Bernardino Avenues. Authorities learned that Lopez got angry with the kitten who came into his apartment and placed her in the freezer for an undisclosed period of time. He removed her from the freezer and squeezed her small body multiple times and eventually threw her off of the second-story balcony. Olive suffered from chest injuries and a broken leg. Lopez was arrested for felony animal cruelty.
Stern who is a volunteer, foster parent, and spokesperson for the North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization saw the story about Olive in an online article for People Magazine. “When I read about Olive I felt physically ill and knew I had to do something to help,” said Beth Stern. “I am so very grateful to everyone from the City of Fontana who saved Olive’s life and was thrilled to meet them when they brought her to me to bring home and foster.”
Stern fosters cats and kittens, focusing mainly on those with special needs. She dedicates much of her time finding safe, forever homes for these sometimes difficult to place cats. The Fontana Mayor Warren thanked Beth and Howard Stern, as well as North Shore League America, for rescuing and fostering animals in need.
Meanwhile, Lopez was released on his own recognizance on February 9, 2018, and failed to appear to his court hearing on February 20, 2018. As a result, Lopez now has a warrant for his arrest.
