BARSTOW – A Sheriff’s Department Reserve Deputy sustained major injuries while searching for a 12-year-old boy who was missing in the desert area near Barstow on Wednesday.
At around 6:17 p.m. Zeke Schultz, of Anaheim, was reported missing by his father, who was riding dirt bikes in the area near Hodge Road, East of the I-15 with him. His father told deputies that his son was last seen at around 3:00 p.m. and was riding a blue dirt bike, wearing a red helmet, striped blue sweater and red riding pants.
Deputies began a search of the area and requested the Sheriff’s aviation to assist. Due to the frigid temperatures, which dropped to 30 degrees overnight Sheriff’s officials called for additional ground units including the Volunteer Forces Division, and search and rescue members.
At around 3:00 a.m. a reserve deputy was involved in an accident while riding an off-road vehicle and was airlifted with major injuries. The search went on through the night, and at 7:20 a.m. on Thursday, December 29th, search and rescue members located Zeke in good condition. Zeke was reunited with his family. The Reserve Deputy remains in the hospital for the treatment of injuries that authorities said are not believed to be life-threatening.
