LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. – The driver who slammed into a California Highway Patrol Sergeant killing him and injuring several others has been arrested.
Sgt. Mario Lucio said in a press conference on Sunday that 36-year-old Michael Callahan has been arrested for DUI and murder. The collision occurred on April 6, 2019, at around 4:26 p.m., when Sgt. Licon, a 27-year CHP veteran was writing a ticket on the right shoulder. The vehicle driven by Callahan drove onto the shoulder striking the CHP motorcycle, Sgt. Licon, and the vehicle Sgt. Licon pulled over. The other vehicle was occupied by a father driver, mother, and two female minors in the backseat.
Evidence shows gross negligence during and before the collision occurred Sgt. Lucio said. “Another reminder of the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. We lost a darn good sergeant he is going to be missed.”
