BARSTOW, Ca. – A truck driver and a good samaritan lost their lives on Sunday morning after a second tractor trailer slammed into the wreckage.
On January 19, 2020, at around 4:14 a..m, John Doe #1 was driving a tractor trailer combination on the 15 freeway south near Hodge Road in the #3 lanes of traffic. John Doe #1 allowed the tractor-trailer to travel to the right, into the shoulder, and into the open desert to the west of the 15 freeway. The tractor trailer overturned, coming to a rest on its right side, partially blocking the #3 lane.
John Doe #2 witnessed the accident and stopped his Mazda 3 on the left shoulder of the 15 freeway north. He got out of his vehicle and ran across the southbound 15 freeway to provide aid to John Doe #1. John Doe #2 stood in the partially blocked #3 lane attempting to aid John Doe #1. Michael Hensley, 52, of Russellville, TN, was driving a tractor trailer combination on the 15 freeway south, south of Hodge Road. According to Mr. Hensley, he was driving approximately 60 miles per hour as he approached the wreckage, where John Doe #1 and John Doe #2 were both standing.
Mr. Hensley did not see the wreckage ahead of him as he slammed into it. “After the collision, John Doe #1’s tractor-trailer combination vehicle, John Doe #2, and Mr. Hensley’s tractor-trailer combination vehicle were redirected to the right, into the open desert terrain,” CHP officials said in a statement. “As a result, John Doe #1’s tractor-trailer combination vehicle became fully engulfed in flames, resulting in the death of John Doe #1. John Doe #2 came to rest underneath Mr. Hensley’s tractor-trailer combination vehicle which also became fully engulfed in flames, resulting in the death of John Doe #2.”
