SAN BERNARDINO– A Hesperia mother that was found guilty of child homicide charges Wednesday, is facing life in prison for the death of her 2-year-old son.
The Mother of the 2-year-old boy Jaimi Roberts, 24 of Hesperia has been convicted of a child causing death, and an additional charge of involuntary manslaughter, from April 24, 2014, death of her 2-year-old son, Grant Dunn Jr.. Roberts now facing 25 years to life in prison will be sentenced on May 12, 2017 by Judge Eric Nakata in Superior Court in Victorville.
Deputy District Attorney David Foy, the prosecutor of the 10-day trial said, ” The defendant deserves every day of her prison sentence.”
Paramedics were dispatched to the Roberts Hesperia home, at that time Roberts was 21-years-of-age. That afternoon Roberts 2-year-old son Grant Dunn Jr. had gone unconscious. Roberts and her boyfriend told San Bernardino County Sheriff Deputies that Dunn Jr. had been throwing up the night before and now seemed to be sicker than the previous night. They stated that Dunn Jr. had finally stopped breathing and lost consciousness.
Roberts stated that she “play-wrestled” with Dunn Jr. MMA style the evening of April 22, 2014, and that she had elbowed him in his abdomen, but he seemed to be fine afterward.
Grant Dunn Jr. was hospitalized that afternoon, but later died due to his injuries. An autopsy showed that Dunn Jr. died from a severe blow to his abdomen, which was consistent with a blow or elbow causing his lower intestines to rupture, spilling waste into his abdominal cavity, This resulted in peritonitis and sepsis that spread through his bloodstream, shutting down his vital organs.
The day after Dunn Jr. had died, Sheriff Deputies questioned Roberts again. Roberts finally admitted to elbowing the child after an hour of questioning. She admitted to striking the child hard two times in the abdomen, she also demonstrated this on video. Roberts also admitted to conducting internet searches for the terms “abdominal trauma, ” “broken rib” and “appendix injury” an hour before she called 911. Roberts went on to admit that she bit the child on his shoulder the day of the “wrestling.”
Dunn Jr’s father testified at the trial, that he had to break-up with Roberts after he witnessed her punching Dunn Jr. in the stomach. He physically attacked Roberts for this, but the incident never was reported to authorities.
At trial, Roberts testified that she falsely confessed to elbowing Dunn Jr. in the stomach. She explained to the jury that Dunn Jr. never showed signs of a serious illness before he lost consciousness on April 24, 2014. Roberts denied any prior abuse to Dunn Jr.
