HESPERIA – A man is recovering both mentally and physically today after his throat was slashed by his son, Darrell Garrett Jr., 31.
According to family, of both the men, Darryl Garrett Sr. was visiting family in California and was driving his motorhome on Saturday afternoon when his son, Darrell Garrett Jr. slashed his throat. Despite his injuries, Garrett Sr. pulled the motorhome into the Hesperia Walmart Parking lot to call 911.
When the first deputy arrived at the scene he immediately located the blood-covered Garrett Jr. who ran into the store. After ordering him to drop his knife multiple times and after a few minutes of chasing the suspect within the store, the deputy was able to take him into custody.
Emergency medical personnel made contact with the injured Garrett Sr. who reported to them that his grandson was inside the store. It is unclear if the assailant ran into the store to retrieve the child or if the child ran in after him. The 8-year-old child was located and placed in the temporary custody of Children and Family Services.
Garrett Jr. was arrested and booked into the West Valley Detention Center for attempted murder and violation of probation. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail and is scheduled to appear at the Victorville Superior Court on Tuesday, October 18, 2016.
Garrett Sr. was airlifted to the hospital where he received treatment for the laceration to his neck. He was released from the hospital the following day. The deputy also was injured as a result of the incident and was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.
The family of those involved is asking for any financial assistance for the victim, Garrett Sr. who did not have health insurance coverage at the time of the incident. “At this time we are trying to help my father focus on his recovery and moving through the trauma he has experienced, as well as that his grandson witnessed,” said his daughter, Jazzlynn Garrett on the Go Fund Me account.
