VICTORVILLE – Let’s face it, being a preteen, teen, and even young adult can be one of the most challenging times in a person’s life. From discovering who they are, learning that the acceptance of others will not always come, and that acceptance from all others is not even really necessary. The process to get to the level of self acceptance takes great support in order to lessen the emotional impact on these young people, especially those considered “different” in some way.
Youth from preteens to young adults in the Victor Valley always struggle with finding safe and positive things to do in the area. One can only visit the Victor Valley Mall, Scandia, the skating rink, or parks so much before they become dull, repetitive, and just downright boring. Many teens find entertainment from computers or video games, which is yet another concern if used without supervision or for long periods of time daily. Crime among teens and young adults has grown to astonishing rates, with bullying becoming an outlet for frustration or many other underlying issues. The target of these bullies can be those less popular or simply just “different”, leaving those who are part of LGBTQ community often being the target.
The problem can stem from poor parental influence, mental health issues, or even just parents working so hard to make ends meet that they are unable to provide the proper supervision for their growing children. The Family Assistance Program, which is unequivocally one of the most comprehensive nonprofits as far as the needs of the community, provides a place aimed to help young people as they grow into happy, healthy, and productive adults. This place is a youth drop-in center called The Fam Spot. Centrally located in the downtown area of Victorville, the Fam Spot provides a place for youth ages 12-21-years-old to be themselves, hang out with others their age, all while under the guidance and supervision of caring adults.
From educational support to fun, The Fam Spot provides new experiences and services for young people including field trips, online tutoring, volunteer opportunities, and leadership opportunities. Peer group sessions including those for Anger Management and Healthy Relationship Classes are offered on Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. The Fam Spot is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Fam Spot is a safe all-inclusive place for young people to be, including those who are part of the LGBTQ community. Free snacks and WiFi are provided. All of the services offered are at no charge, so any young person who feels that they can benefit from The Fam Spot should check it out.
The Fam Spot is located at 16857 C Street near 6th Street in the City of Victorville. For more information call (760) 843-0701 or visit the Fam Spot online at: http://familyassist.org/our-causes/famspot/
