RANCHO CUCAMONGA – A 20-year-old Rancho Cucamonga mother was arrested for allegedly abusing her three-month-old son, officials said. On Sunday deputies from the Rancho Cucamonga station were dispatched to the 9400 block of Glenaire Court for a baby not breathing. Emergency medical personnel responded and transported the baby to San Antonio Hospital where it was learned her sustained a severe brain injury. Medical personnel indicated that the injury was caused by a traumatic injury to the head of the child.
The child was then taken to Loma Linda Children’s Hospital for a higher level of care. The child was seen by a Forensic Pediatrician who found that the infant was suffering from severe bleeding and swelling to his brain. The injuries were consistent with ongoing abuse, the Forensic Pediatrician said. The baby remains in critical condition in the Loma Linda Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
An investigation headed by Social workers from Children and Family Services and Detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department – Crimes Against Children and Homicide detail. The baby was placed in protective custody. Authorities said that the mother, Marisela Manuel’s initial account of how the baby was injured was not consistent with the injuries.
On Monday morning detectives interviewed Manuel about the incident and at the conclusion of the interview, she was arrested for Child Endangerment, causing great bodily injury. She was booked into the Central Detention Center where she is being held on $500,000 bail.
