RIVERSIDE – Riverside Community Hospital was evacuated Tuesday morning when a patient came in with possible chemical exposure. A total of 19 firefighters responded to the hospital located at 4445 Magnolia Avenue in the City of Riverside for the hazardous material incident. The response was focused on the hospital’s emergency waiting room when a patient with the possible exposure arrived for the treatment of burns. The patient has moderate 2nd-degree burns to both arms caused by Butane.
Due to the burn injuries being caused by Butane, a possibly harmful chemical, the patient was decontaminated by hospital staff, who also began treating him. The City of Riverside Fire Hazardous Materials Team (Haz Mat) responded to conduct air monitoring in the lobby and cleared the lobby for reentry. Riverside Community Hospital was cleared by 9:00 a.m. and is back to their normal operations.
